Irish growers gain access to proven wheat fungicide Univoq™
Univoq™, one of the leading fungicides used to control septoria and rusts, is now available to wheat growers in Ireland.
Univoq has been widely used across Europe and the world and consistently proven its efficacy against key diseases, most notably septoria. The product contains the Inatreq™ active molecule in co-formulation with prothioconazle, optimised by Corteva’s patented i-Q4™ formulation which enables Univoq to stick to, spread across, and penetrate the leaf’s surface. Its robust activity on the main diseases found in Irish wheat fields means green leaf area is maximised, laying the foundations for greater yields.
The greatest benefit of applying Univoq has been seen at the T2 fungicide timing, although many growers have also explored the benefits of the product at T1.
Liz Glynn, National Technical Manager for Ireland, said: “It’s really good news that Corteva is able to offer Univoq to wheat growers in Ireland this year following the great successes it has delivered in terms of disease control and yields across Europe.
“Many growers here will have already seen how effective the Inatreq molecule is having used it in our Questar™, Aquino™ and Peacoq™ fungicide co-packs which have been on the market since 2021.
“In Univoq we now have a one-bottle solution offering simplicity and ease of use, with the additional benefit of the i-Q4 formulation.”

Tillage farmers need to rethink herbicide strategies following 2024’s wet start
With some fields still under water following widespread rainfall, farmers will need a robust herbicide plan in place as they battle to catch up this spring.
A wet autumn delayed drilling of many winter cereals, causing a backlog of fieldwork that will need to be fulfilled as quickly as possible. Those who did manage to drill their wheat will also need to review their herbicide strategy following the bad weather.
"We’ve had a number of difficult seasons in a row, and each poses a new challenge for arable farmers," says our Cereal Herbicides Category Manager, Alister McRobbie. "The past couple of years have been very cold and dry, but we’re facing the opposite in 2024. Parts of the major cereal-growing areas, especially the north east of Ireland, are suffering from saturated soils, so it will be a while before there is any activity in badly affected areas.
"Those with a busy fieldwork schedule should plan ahead, decide on their herbicide programme in advance, and make sure it’s in store ready to go."
Farmers who managed to drill wheat last autumn will also need to rethink their strategy as it is unlikely they will be able to rely on the activity of their pre-emergence applications.
|
|
"A lot of the wheat would have received a pre-emergence herbicide, but there has been so much water it is likely this will have been washed through the soil profile,” adds Alister. “It won’t have worked very well, so there will be a need to control grassweeds such as brome, ryegrass and wild oats relatively early.”
The performance of autumn residuals will undoubtedly be impeded by the wet conditions, making a spring clean of weeds even more essential than usual.
Broadway® Star is a mainstay of spring grassweed control programmes and will be amongst the first products applied as soon as the opportunity to get sprayers working presents itself.
Teagasc research has shown that Broadway Star has no known resistance to sterile brome and wild oats in Ireland. This makes it an obvious choice for spring weed control, and it has the added benefit of having excellent efficacy against some of the main broad-leaved weeds, including cleavers, chickweed and charlock.

Boost your OSR yields with BlueN
When applying nitrogen fertiliser to crops, its effectiveness in supporting plant growth is not always guaranteed, on average 60% of the applied nitrogen is used whilst some 40% is lost to the wider environment. Nitrogen fertiliser can be prone to significant losses, especially after periods of intense rainfall causing soil saturation. With this in mind, consider augmenting your OSR nitrogen regime this spring with a sustainable biological alternative.
Our nutrient efficiency biostimulant, BlueN™, is a revolutionary product that offers a sustainable source of nitrogen for OSR, helping mitigate the risk of leaching. BlueN contains an exclusive strain of nitrogen-fixing bacteria that lives inside of the plant from application right up until harvest. BlueN enhances nitrogen use efficiency by fixing atmospheric nitrogen (N2) and converting it to ammonium inside the plant. Additionally, BlueN improves the photosynthetic activity of OSR.
As a living product we advise using BlueN on the day of opening and should be applied to OSR within an optimal window. We recommend applying BlueN when temperatures are around 10oC and rising but no hotter than 25oC. Apply when stomata are likely to be open, usually in the morning or later in the afternoon, this facilitates the entry of bacteria into the plant. Whilst BlueN can be applied to OSR from 4-6 leaf stage (in the autumn) up to the end of mid flowering stage (BBCH 69) the ideal timing is when at least 50% of the ground is covered by crops usually at or just before early stem extension (BBCH 30) in the spring.

Spring clean your oilseed rape with Korvetto herbicide
As spring emerges after a tough, wet but mild winter, broad-leaved weeds have continued to emerge and are ever present.
Korvetto® has excellent activity on key weeds such as poppies, mayweeds, cleavers and thistles. It contains Arylex™ active and clopyralid.
Timing of Korvetto application is from 1st March during stem elongation up to before flower buds are visible above the canopy (BBCH 30-50) and it can be used from 8-25°C in humid or dry conditions. Avoid treating the crop when it is under stress, especially when frost is expected.
There are no following crop restrictions in a normal crop rotation and farmers are free to use 1 L/ha of Korvetto if they have applied a post-emergence herbicide in the autumn such as Belkar® or Astrokerb®.

New Pioneer Maize Hybrids launched for 2024
We are very pleased to present our latest hybrid range for Pioneer maize:
P7381 is a new Pioneer hybrid with much to offer. It is an impressive very early maturity hybrid with proven high yields in PACTS trials across favourable and less favourable sites.
P7647 is another desirable very early maturity hybrid which promises high yields of silage and grain. Tested on both favourable and less favourable sites, results shown P7647 is able to maintain its yield and dry matter advantage on less favourable sites.
P7655 is an exciting early hybrid packed with promise. After the first year of PACTS testing, P7655 demonstrated the highest starch content of any hybrid. Extra high-quality yields and very good lodging resistance makes P7655 a great hybrid for favourable locations.
