Seed treatment options

With oilseed rape drilling starting this month, we would like to outline the role seed treatments can play in getting your crop off to the best start. This year Pioneer is also able to provide two unique seed treatments on its varieties being shipped to farms across Ireland.

Pioneer winter oilseed rape seed is available treated with LumiGEN^™ Premium or LumiGEN^™ Insecticide Premium powered by Lumiposa^™. Both options include the nutrient growth promoter Lumidapt Optima^™ and the fungicide Scenic Gold^™.

Scenic Gold fungicidal seed treatment has proven effect against phoma, alternaria, downy mildew and damping off. It sets a new standard against existing solutions.

The insecticide seed treatment Lumiposa is extensively used in Europe and is an option available when looking for establishment assistance for crops challenged by a range of insect pests.

Either, or both, of these treatments can be specified when ordering any of Pioneer’s most popular seed varieties in the coming weeks before drilling gets underway in 2024.

Pioneer winter oilseed rape hybrids

Our Pioneer winter oilseed rape hybrid range for the 2024 season includes:

PT303: The first winter oilseed rape hybrid to offer growers in the UK and Ireland top level yields with built-in tolerance to Sclerotinia.

PT312: Provides a very high gross output yield with a very high oil content combined with turnip yellows virus resistance and Sclerotinia tolerance.

PT315: This hybrid has given a high gross output yield with a very high oil content. It combines pod shatter resistance with turnip yellows virus resistance.

PT279CL: The first Clearfield hybrid to be added to the AHDB Recommended List and continues to offer high yields with good standing power.

PX131: The only semi-dwarf hybrid on the 2024 AHDB Descriptive List. This unique hybrid provides growers with the greatest ease of combining.

Feature hybrid: PT312

PT312 is the second Pioneer Protector^® Sclerotinia winter oilseed rape hybrid offered to Irish growers for commercial planting.

In addition to sclerotinia tolerance, it is complemented by other notable levels of early growth. An interim 2023 ADAS field trial has just reported that PT312 gave ground cover of 65.0% and a vigour score of 6.7 on the 17 October 2022. On the 23 March its vigour score was assessed at 8.2 and ground cover was 73.3%. These are both impressive vigour scores and underline the ability of the newest Pioneer hybrids to grow strongly in the autumn and the spring. These scores significantly exceeded those of all the check varieties in the trial.

Important stewardship advice:

Adopt good propyzamide stewardship principles before drilling your OSR. Field selection, tramline placement and buffer zones should all be considered with the objective of keeping the active ingredient out of watercourses.
