Focus on spring barley weed control with Arylex™
Most spring barley crops have now emerged and to date, few have received herbicide for grass or broad-leaved weed control. Additionally, many growers are considering just a single fungicide application on the later drilled crops, due to their lower potential.
As temperatures rise, spring barley will race through the growth stages, so growers should be ready to take out weeds early to prevent any competitive effect on already potentially reduced yield potential.
Product choice and application timing are two important decisions that farmers will need to consider, and growers should plan a robust BLW control program.
Arylex™ active (found in Zypar® and Pixxaro®) can be applied from three leaves of the crop up to GS45, with a wide range of tank mix options.
Both products deliver outstanding control of difficult weeds found in spring barley such as cleavers, poppies, cranesbill, chickweed, black-bindweed and of course the Achilles heel of sulfonyl-urea chemistry – Fumitory.
To maximise your BLW control:
- Apply Zypar at up to 1l/ha for robust control of difficult BLW’s.
- To boost activity on polygonum species, tank-mix Zypar with a sulfonyl-urea herbicide such as Harmony M.
- If targeting ALS resistant chickweed, a common problem in Scotland, Pixxaro at 0.5l/ha. would be the better option because it contains fluroxypyr.
- Both products have excellent activity against cleavers, cranesbill and fumitory.
- Following crop choices are not limited by the use of Arylex products either, giving growers the greatest choice of planting options the following autumn, with no cultivation restrictions.
- View the wide range of tank mix options: Zypar tank mixes and Pixxaro tank mixes.

Univoq™ - Something reliable in an uncertain season
Rain, rain, sunshine, rain… what a season! With many T2 applications now pushing onto a late calendar timing and gaps between T1 and T2 sprays varying, the choice of T2 wheat fungicide is critical. With crop prices firming and the weather driving disease levels up, it is critical to choose a reliable T2 fungicide option.
Following three years of successful use on farm, cereal fungicide Univoq has established itself as a key component of disease control programmes in wheat, showing consistent, strong performance. Its unique site of action means there is no cross resistance to any other chemistry used on farms today which is what drives this reliable disease control.
- Robust in the face of septoria and rusts
- No cross resistance to other chemistries
- Enhanced spray retention = improve rainfastness
- The ultimate in coverage, penetration and uptake
- Lasting protection, laying the foundations for higher yields
Univoq may only be applied once within your fungicide programme. With continued disease development this season, rate choice is more likely to fall in the 1.25L/ha to 1.5L/ha range which will provide good broad-spectrum disease control and persistent protection against septoria.
Don’t just take our word for it!
Dr Aoife O’Driscoll, Plant Pathologist at NIAB, said: “In terms of disease pressure in current crops, it’s a mixed bag. From what we’ve heard and from what we’re seeing on the ground when it comes to septoria, it seems to be a bad year for it. There is also a lot of brown and yellow rust being reported, but the issues of mildew and eyespot are not so prominent.”
Aoife goes on to note: “This season growers will be really looking at the cost of their programme and how much of a return they are likely to get from their investment, and Univoq should have a leading role to play. For many years in our trials, it consistently shows excellent disease control which transfers into a yield uplift.
“For example, in years like 2023 where a dry June saw disease stopped in its tracks following T2 applications, Univoq still added around 0.3t/ha over its currently available competitors. In wetter years where the pressure is on to keep flag leaves clean, this yield advantage can reach up to 0.7t/ha.” Watch our interview with Aoife here.

Ympact® a new growth nutrition seed treatment from Corteva
Inspired by nature, Ympact® is a novel biostimulant seed treatment which enhances seedling growth by optimising metabolic processes and abiotic stress tolerance.
Ympact helps crops to get off to a great start during early growth development even in poorer establishment conditions. It is formed from purified lignin, which is a natural by-product of the paper manufacturing process sourced from conifer trees.
The resulting product, Ympact is a biostimulant that contains an optimal ratio of humic and fulvic acids which are bonded with selected micronutrients essential for plant development.
Nutrient availability is essential for any plant to function to its optimum. In the beginning, nutrients in the endosperm are neither immediately nor sufficiently available to support germination properly. Seeds initially only have a limited amount of energy available to release nutrients for germination and plant development.
With Ympact's unique molecular complex combined with micronutrients, seeds are supported with additional external nutrients and energy which support various metabolic activities during the germination process.
Benefits of Ympact:
- Speeds up plant emergence and improves early crop vigour.
- Enables more uniform plant establishment.
- Increases biomass and chlorophyll content.
- Increases metabolic activity and tolerance to diseases.
- Increases winter hardiness.
- Compatible with fungicidal base seed dressings.

Maximise your yield with BlueN™
With challenging weather conditions so far, the window for drilling and planting potatoes, sugar beet and maize has been extended. Consider applying BlueN to boost nitrogen efficiency in these crops and improve yield potential.
BlueN contains a naturally occurring bacteria, Methylobacterium symbioticum, that will fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and convert it into ammonium fertiliser in the plant. Meta data analysis from potatoes, sugar beet and maize has shown that an application of BlueN on top of the planned nitrogen programme has produced considerable yield benefits overall. See below example of data on sugar beet:

The importance of controlling thistles and volunteer potatoes in sugar beet
Just one thistle per m2 can reduce sugar beet yields by as much as 11%. Shield Pro™, containing clopyralid, is very active against Compositae weeds such as thistles. Ideally use a programmed approach of 0.25L/ha, which knocks out apical dominance stimulating fresh growth from the crown of the thistle, followed by 0.5L/ha about 14 days later, which will finally kill the weed. If only one spray opportunity is planned, then use a single application at 0.5L/ha to the weed at rosette stage.
Read more about why controlling thistles in sugar beet is so important here.
Similarly, 5 potato volunteers per m2 can result in a yield loss of up to 16.5 tonnes/hectare, and in addition will be a source of potato blight and potato cyst nematode. Therefore, control of volunteer potatoes is important not just for the sugar beet crop but also for surrounding potato crops and the rotation. Shield Pro, ideally applied in sequence of 2 x 0.25L/ha with a 7-day interval, is the go-to strategy for controlling volunteer potatoes in sugar beet.
If there is a simple broad-leaved weed problem, the addition of 0.25L/ha of Shield Pro to the mix, with activity on e.g. mayweeds and groundsel, will broaden the spectrum and activity of the whole mix.
