Ensure your blight programme is robust with Zorvec Entecta™

As crops transition from Rapid Growth to Stable Canopy, ensure your second application of Zorvec Entecta is applied. Containing the tried and trusted Zorvec™ active, its systemic activity and persistence protect emerging foliage—particularly important as P. infestans risk increases with forecasted showers and warmer temperatures. If blight risk is present, include a curative non-OSBPI partner, such as cymoxanil (e.g. Option®) or propamocarb.

Watch the latest potato crop update with Craig Chisholm and Abi Morton who visited a main crop potato field in early June and discussed what should be on growers' minds as the season progresses.
Although early season pressure has been low, we began 2025 facing the same late blight population we ended with in 2024. To maintain effective control, it's essential to follow the Zorvec active Best Practice Application Advice; visit the Zorvec active stewardship hub to stay up to date with the latest information.
Fight Against Blight is reporting that the Hutton Criteria are being met across much of the potato-growing region in the coming week, indicating heightened late blight risk. Stay vigilant and adjust your programme accordingly.

Pioneer® WOSR hybrids and LumiGEN® seed treatment options

At Corteva, we have a trio of high performing Pioneer WOSR hybrids proven in UK & Ireland conditions.
  • PT303 - the first winter oilseed rape hybrid to offer growers top level yields with built-in tolerance to Sclerotinia and Verticillium Stem Stripe.
  • PT312 - has given high gross output yields with very high oil contents and provides Protector Sclerotinia tolerance with partial Verticillium Stem Stripe resistance.
  • PT315 - has given high gross output yields with a very high oil content and pod shatter resistance.
Every Pioneer hybrid is resistant to Turnip Yellows Virus. Pioneer WOSR seed is treated with LumiGEN Premium or LumiGEN Premium Insecticide Powered by Lumiposa™. Both options include the nutrient growth promoter Lumidapt Optima™ and the fungicide Scenic Gold™. The insecticide Lumiposa helps get crops off to the right start. UK trials show Lumiposa can lead to a higher plant establishment and fewer cabbage stem flea beetle larvae per plant. In early drilling situations, its protection against cabbage root fly attack may be very valuable.

Oilseed rape herbicides and water stewardship

With harvest just around the corner and planning for the next crops underway, we thought it would be useful to remind growers about some of the stewardship best practices that should be considered now, ahead of OSR drilling.

In line with best practice guidance from the Voluntary Initiative, simple steps should be implemented to help ensure that autumn and winter-applied products don’t reach watercourses. You can read more about propyzamide stewardship here.

Steps to consider before drilling and at establishment of your oilseed rape:

1. Aim to grow oilseed rape on low-risk fields:
  • Those that don't slope to a watercourse (field slope is less than 5% - 1m fall in 20m).
  • Field that are less susceptible to run-off.
  • That are not bordered by a watercourse.
  • Fields where there are no field drains.
  • Those that have not been deep sub-soiled (below plough layer) or mole-drained within the preceding 6 months.
2. Consider appropriate establishment, direction of working travel, soil type and topography:
  • Layout tramlines so that they do not provide a direct route for water to leave the field.
  • Disturb the surface compaction in the tramlines if possible.
  • Ideally, establish the crop with true minimum tillage (working the top 4-6cm only) or by direct drilling.
3. Use buffer zones:
  • To reduce the risk of run-off (both water and sediment) that may contain pesticides from reaching watercourses, the VI guidelines recommend a 6m buffer along watercourses, if possible.
  • Wide buffers are advisable in particularly vulnerable areas.
4. Safeguard zones:
  • Refer to the Environment Agency website “Drinking Water Protected Areas Safeguard Zones (SgZs)” to check if planned oilseed rape fields are in a Safeguard Zone. Consider not growing this crop if mitigation methods cannot be put in place and there is a high risk of herbicides moving into water.

Maximise yield with BlueN™

BlueN is a novel nutrient efficiency biostimulant for use in a wide range of crops, including potatoes, maize and sugar beet. BlueN contains Methylobacterium symbioticum, a bacterium found in nature that fixes atmospheric nitrogen for use by the plant. BlueN provides a sustainable, alternative source of nitrogen that reduces dependency of nitrogen uptake from the soil and ensures the plant has access to nitrogen all season long.

Proven results in 2024 trials:

Sugar beet
In 2024 trials, BlueN delivered an average yield increase of 12.5% (adjusted to 16% sugar content) in sugar beet. With a return on investment of £415/ha (based on £33/t for sugar beet and £30/ha for BlueN), the benefits are clear.

Sam Myhill of MB Farming Ltd used BlueN for the first time last year and saw yield increases of 29% in his trial. To find out more, read the full article here.

Potatoes
Potato trials showed an average marketable yield increase of 4t/ha. This translated to an impressive return on investment of £970/ha (based on £250/t for potatoes and £30/ha for BlueN).

These results build on previous grower experiences. Read how potato grower Andrew Thomas increased his Maris Peer potato yield by 20% with a BlueN application here.

Forage maize
In forage maize, BlueN boosted fresh and dry matter yields. One grower-led trial series across five sites recorded an average yield increase of just over 2t/ha in dry matter yield.
