Rethinking herbicide strategies following 2024's wet start
With some fields still under water following widespread rainfall, farmers will need a robust herbicide plan in place as they battle to catch up this spring.
A wet autumn delayed drilling of many winter cereals, causing a backlog of fieldwork that will need to be fulfilled as quickly as possible. Those who did manage to drill their wheat will also need to review their herbicide strategy following the bad weather.
"We’ve had a number of difficult seasons in a row, and each poses a new challenge for arable farmers," says our Cereal Herbicides Category Manager, Alister McRobbie. "The past couple of years have been very cold and dry, but we’re facing the opposite in 2024. Parts of the major wheat-growing areas of the UK are either under water or suffering from saturated soils, so it will be a while before there is any on-farm activity in badly affected areas.
"Those with a compressed fieldwork schedule should plan ahead, decide on their herbicide programme in advance, and make sure it’s in store ready to go."
Farmers who managed to drill wheat last autumn will also need to rethink their strategy as it is unlikely they will be able to rely on the activity of their pre-emergence applications.
|
|
"It is likely that pre-emergence herbicides will have been washed though the soil profile," adds Alister. "It won’t have worked very well, so there will be a need to control grassweeds such as brome, ryegrass and wild oats relatively early."
The performance of autumn residuals will undoubtedly be impeded by the wet conditions, making a spring clean of weeds even more essential than usual.
Broadway® Star is a mainstay of spring grassweed control programmes and amongst the first products applied as soon as the opportunity to get sprayers working presents itself. It gives excellent control of brome species, ryegrass, wild oats and a range of broad-leaved weeds in winter wheat and also has approval for use in spring wheat.

Boost your OSR yields with BlueN
When applying nitrogen fertiliser to crops, its effectiveness in supporting plant growth is not always guaranteed, on average 60% of the applied nitrogen is used whilst some 40% is lost to the wider environment. Nitrogen fertiliser can be prone to significant losses, especially after periods of intense rainfall causing soil saturation. With this in mind, consider augmenting your OSR nitrogen regime this spring with a sustainable biological alternative.
Our nutrient efficiency biostimulant, BlueN™, is a revolutionary product that offers a sustainable source of nitrogen for OSR, helping mitigate the risk of leaching. BlueN contains an exclusive strain of nitrogen-fixing bacteria that lives inside of the plant from application right up until harvest. BlueN enhances nitrogen use efficiency by fixing atmospheric nitrogen (N2) and converting it to ammonium inside the plant. Additionally, BlueN improves the photosynthetic activity of OSR.
As a living product we advise using BlueN on the day of opening and should be applied to OSR within an optimal window. We recommend applying BlueN when temperatures are around 10oC and rising but no hotter than 25oC. Apply when stomata are likely to be open, usually in the morning or later in the afternoon, this facilitates the entry of bacteria into the plant. Whilst BlueN can be applied to OSR from 4-6 leaf stage (in the autumn) up to the end of mid flowering stage (BBCH 69) the ideal timing is when at least 50% of the ground is covered by crops usually at or just before early stem extension (BBCH 30) in the spring.
As the weather warms, stay informed on the optimal timing for BlueN application to your OSR crop using our BlueN Applicatior Optimiser available on our free Corteva Arable App. This tool helps you make informed application decisions 7 days in advance for maximising the benefits of BlueN and optimising your crop's performance.

Spring clean your oilseed rape with Korvetto herbicide
As spring emerges after a tough, wet but mild winter, broad-leaved weeds have continued to emerge and are ever present.
Korvetto® has excellent activity on key weeds such as poppies, mayweeds, cleavers and thistles. It contains Arylex™ active and clopyralid.
Timing of Korvetto application is from 1st March during stem elongation up to before flower buds are visible above the canopy (BBCH 30-50) and it can be used from 8-25°C in humid or dry conditions. Avoid treating the crop when it is under stress, especially when frost is expected.
There are no following crop restrictions in a normal crop rotation and farmers are free to use 1 L/ha of Korvetto if they have applied a post-emergence herbicide in the autumn such as Belkar® or Astrokerb®.

Start to think about your Winter OSR hybrids with our Pioneer range
At Corteva Agriscience, we have a selection of Pioneer® WOSR hybrids that have been extensively trialled across a variety of sites in the UK. Some of our most exciting hybrids include:
PT312 provides a high gross output yield with a very high oil content. PT312 was launched in 2023 and has Protector Sclerotinia tolerance with Turnip yellows virus (TuYV) resistance and pod shatter resistance.
PT315, also launched in 2023, has demonstrated high gross output yield with a very high oil content. PT315 has a unique agronomic package which includes pod shatter resistance, TuYV resistance and the highest autumn vigour score of any hybrid in the Pioneer range.
PT303 is the first winter oilseed rape hybrid to offer growers in the UK and Ireland top level yields with built-in tolerance to Sclerotinia. PT303 also has notable verticilium stem strip tolerance and TuYV resistance for strong autumn vigour and spring regrowth.

Instinct: Protect your nitrogen and avoid more losses this spring
With such a wet, mild winter it is likely that soils have lost nitrogen and there will be a lot of hungry crops out there. With warmer soils, there may be some conversion of ammonium to nitrate, but if the crop doesn’t have a sufficiently developed root network, or there is too much water, nitrate can be leached deeper into the soil or into the wider environment. If the soil becomes waterlogged, that nitrate may be converted to nitrous oxide and lost to the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas.
Instinct® is a tool that helps manage nitrogen challenges. An application of Instinct in February and March, just prior to the application of slurry, digestate, or any fertiliser containing an ammoniacal form of nitrogen, will stabilise the ammonium, slowing it’s conversion by pseudomonas bacteria to nitrate. The ammonium will not leach, keeping more nitrogen in the upper layer of the soil, where it will be more accessible to the crop when growing conditions are favourable. Instinct keeps more nitrogen in the soil for longer.
An application of Instinct in February or March, will slow the conversion of ammonium for a period of 10-12 weeks, and keeps it just where it’s needed.

New Pioneer Maize Hybrids launched for 2024
We are very pleased to present our latest hybrid range for Pioneer maize:
P7381 is a new Pioneer hybrid with much to offer. It is an impressive very early maturity hybrid with proven high yields in PACTS trials across favourable and less favourable sites.
P7647 is another desirable very early maturity hybrid which promises high yields of silage and grain. Tested on both favourable and less favourable sites, results have shown P7647 is able to maintain its yield and dry matter advantage on less favourable sites.
After four years of testing, P7364 is available to UK growers for the first time. P7364 is a tall, early maturity hybrid with good early vigour and very good standing ability on favourable and better less favourable sites.
P7655 is an exciting early hybrid packed with promise. After the first year of PACTS testing, P7655 demonstrated the highest starch content of any hybrid. Extra high-quality yields and very good lodging resistance makes P7655 a great hybrid for favourable locations.
