It’s time to apply Astrokerb or Kerb Flo
Temperatures are dropping which will bring soil temperatures down. This means conditions are now suitable for applications of Astrokerb® or Kerb®Flo.
Propyzamide works best when:
- Soils are moist but not waterlogged, essential to move the chemical into the root zone of the weeds.
- Soil temperatures are below 10°C at 30cms depth.
This ensures the appropriate concentration and availability of propyzamide required to be taken up by the roots of the target weeds to provide effective control of grass and broad-leaved weeds.
Crop size is not a barrier, propyzamide can be applied once the crop has reached 3 true leaves and efficacy is not affected by large canopies.
Growers should also consider other relevant factors including the weather at the time of application, soil and field conditions and application equipment, before applying Astrokerb or Kerb Flo.
Remember Right Rate, Right Conditions and Right Time.
Astrokerb and Kerb Flo can also be tank-mixed with:
- Belkar® to provide additional weed control on cleavers, fumitory, mayweeds, shepherd’s purse and cranesbill.
- A wide range of fungicides to control phoma and light leaf spot diseases, to avoid an additional spray-pass.

Crop size for Belkar application
Most crops have established well and are looking good. Early drilled crops have large canopies and haven’t opened up with the lack of frosts. Weeds will still be emerging and growing under the canopies.
In trials throughout Europe, large crop canopies have never been reported to have caused reduced performance from a Belkar application. However, if you want to wait until the canopy has opened up, Belkar will work in colder conditions as low as 2°C. For more information on Belkar, go to our website.

Kerb Flo on winter beans
Kerb Flo has approval for grassweeds, including blackgrass and ryegrass and some broad-leaved weed control, e.g. black bindweed, chickweed, fat hen, knotgrass, small nettle and speedwells on winter beans. Astrokerb is NOT approved on beans due to crop selectivity. Remember field beans are now considered a major crop and so weed control options are reduced as all previous EAMU authorisations have been withdrawn.

Get ahead of challenging broad-leaved weeds this autumn
Last season saw some difficult broad-leaved weed challenges, namely groundsel and poppy. As this season progresses, drilling is being prioritised, leading to some compromise in seed-bed quality, giving rise to protracted weed germination and lower efficacy of residual herbicides in some cases.
Furthermore, the warm, wet autumn has increased herbicide breakdown, reducing the length of protection that residual herbicides offer, resulting in high levels of broad-leaved weeds.
Increasingly, autumn has seen greater levels of challenging weeds as several broader spectrum residual actives have been lost. Current residual herbicide options have a more limited spectrum and leave gaps for these weeds to slip through, so early control of these weeds is essential!
Corteva’s Zypar® can be used in both autumn and spring to control these difficult weeds, and unlike the phenoxies and SU’s, this product can be used from GS13 and is not affected by cooler conditions.
Take advantage of early spray windows for broad-leaved weed control and utilise Zypar at 0.75L/ha in the autumn, increasing the rate to 1.0L/ha in spring to control a wide range of species including poppy, chickweed, cleavers, fumitory, volunteer beans, brassicas and mayweeds.

“Getting ahead of broad-leaved weeds in cereals early is essential to limit the impact of competition for resources and ultimately yield. There are also benefits to overall costs, as it is often cheaper to target smaller weeds with lower rates early in the season, when compared to later applications on larger weeds that may require a higher use rate and may also result in compromised levels of control. Removing weeds from the crop early also simplifies later season tank-mixes and product selection”.
