Stay ahead this winter: Corteva's essential December
top tips for OSR success

With some great crops of oilseed rape out there and winter arriving, the challenges increase with more unpredictable cooler weather, crops opening up allowing for further weed emergence.

Here are some of Corteva's top weed control recommendations:

  • Apply propyzamide before the deadline: the cut-off for Astrokerb® and Kerb® Flo is 31st January. Complete all stewardship checks before applying.
  • Extra broad-leaved weed control?: Belkar® can tank mixed with Astrokerb or Kerb Flo.
  • Plan ahead for weed management: as crops open up in spring, review weed pressure and order Korvetto® for a thorough clean-up.

Astrokerb and Kerb Flo FAQs:

Can I tank mix Belkar with Kerb Flo or Astrokerb?
Yes, Kerb Flo or Astrokerb are compatible with Belkar for additional broad-leaved weed control and can be mixed with approved graminicides or fungicides to avoid extra spray passes.

Do I need a dry leaf for application?
No, Kerb Flo is soil-acting, so spraying wet weeds or light rainfall after application is not an issue.

Do I need a dry leaf for Astrokerb?
Ideally apply to a drying leaf. Rainfastness for the aminopyralid component is about 1 hour; heavy rain within that time may reduce efficacy.

What is the rainfast period for Astrokerb?
For the aminopyralid component, rainfastness is approximately 1 hour. Avoid spraying if heavy rain is imminent.

What stewardship steps should I follow for Kerb Flo or Astrokerb?
Check field drains, avoid spraying near watercourses and follow buffer zone requirements. Always complete your propyzamide stewardship checklist before application.

Gearing up for spring:
tackling early weed pressures in cereals

As thoughts turn to Christmas, growers shouldn't forget the importance of early season weed control in cereals next spring. Although it remains to be seen what spring 2026 will look like, this autumn residual herbicides went on in warm, dry conditions, so will most likely run out of steam early.

Warm conditions are also encouraging continued germination of both grassweeds and broad-leaved weeds. When residual chemistry begins to lose effectiveness and weed emergence persists, early intervention becomes critical. Weeds such as bromes, ryegrass, wild oats (including ACCase-resistant biotypes), and broad-leaved species like cleavers, fumitory, chickweed, poppy, umbellifers, and mayweeds can quickly impact crop performance if left unchecked. Selecting a robust contact herbicide to achieve high levels of control early in the season is essential.

Manhattan®
This year, Corteva Agriscience introduced Manhattan, a new herbicide designed for grass and broad-leaved weed control in Irish cereal crops. Manhattan combines three active ingredients Arylex™, pyroxsulam, and florasulam, delivering an advanced solution for winter wheat, rye, triticale, and spelt. This marks a significant evolution from Broadway® Star, widely used by tillage farmers, by incorporating Arylex for enhanced performance and a wider weed spectrum, taking already proven and powerful chemistry to new highs.

Manhattan is formulated as a wettable granule in a five-hectare pack and should be applied at a rate of 100g/ha with a suitable adjuvant.

There are no following crop restrictions and the wide application window spans autumn and spring from growth stage 12 through to 32. There is a broad tank mix list, and the product is extremely safe on crops.

Manhattan is easy to use, flexible, and delivers one of the widest spectrums of both grass and broad-leaved weed control available.

Zypar®
For growers targeting just broad-leaved weeds in winter or spring crops, Corteva’s Zypar can be used in both autumn and spring, an effective solution to control difficult weeds, and unlike the phenoxies and SU’s, this product can be used from GS13 and is not affected by cooler conditions.

Take advantage of early spray windows for broad-leaved weed control and utilise Zypar at 0.75L/ha in the autumn, increasing the rate to 1.0L/ha in spring to control a wide range of species including poppy, chickweed, cleavers, fumitory, volunteer beans, groundsel, brassicas and mayweeds.

Pioneer® turns 100 in 2026!

Next year marks a major milestone - Pioneer celebrates its 100th anniversary. Since 1926, Pioneer has been at the forefront of agricultural innovation, starting with the introduction of hybrid seed maize and continuing with breakthroughs in genetics.

This centenary is more than a celebration of the past - it’s about shaping the future of farming together. As we approach this historic moment, we invite you to join us in commemorating a century of progress and partnership.

In 1989, Pioneer expanded its global footprint by establishing operations in the United Kingdom and Ireland, marking a significant milestone in its European growth strategy. This move allowed the company to bring its expertise in hybrid seed technology closer to farmers in these regions, supporting local agriculture with innovative products and tailored agronomic services. The UK and Ireland entry reflected Pioneer’s commitment to advancing crop performance and strengthening relationships within the European farming community.
