Getting your weed control right in a difficult season with Zypar
Now that the land is becoming fit to travel, growers face the challenge of a large backlog of spray operations and fieldwork. Getting on top of grass and broad-leaved weeds should however be the priority in the coming weeks, before weeds become larger and more competitive with the crop.
Maintaining use rates should also be a consideration, as larger weeds will require higher use rates for effective control. In addition, many crops are also fast approaching the cut-off for safe use of phenoxy herbicides, which will limit weed control options. With reports of difficult broad-leaved weeds such as Cleavers, Cranesbill, Poppy, Shepherd’s Purse and Fumitory present in crops, choosing the right herbicide will be more important than ever.
Zypar® offers broad spectrum broad-leaved weed control and sets the industry standard for control of the most competitive weeds, including Cleavers, Cranes-bill, Fumitory, Mayweed and Brassica species. With applications permitted up to and including GS45 (30th June) on winter and spring cereals, except oats. Zypar offers a flexible window of application to the grower, beyond that of phenoxy and sulfonyl-urea herbicides.
If using Zypar on Winter Oats, the cut-off of GS32 is fast approaching, with reports of oat crops already at GS30. Users are reminded that there is a limited number of approved tank-mixes for use on Winter Oats. Remember that the maximum use rate is also lower at 0.5l/ha when using Zypar on Winter Oats. Zypar does have a wide range of approved and tested tank-mix compatibilities on other cereals, allowing growers to make the most of the limited spray opportunities and apply your tank-mix of choice. PT303 maintains high position on the 2023 AHDB Recommended List
PT303 Protector® Sclerotinia is the first hybrid offered to UK and Ireland growers with a claim for Sclerotinia tolerance. It’s impressive disease package includes TuYV resistance, partial resistance to verticillium stem stripe and a score of 7 for light leaf spot and 6 for phoma. Deploying Inatreq™ active in your fungicide programme
The Challenge
Early sown crops and conducive winter conditions have conspired to provide Septoria with a great start this spring. Add to this the wet weather through March, which will have restricted activity in most areas, and it is easy to see why growers are facing such a significant challenge as we start T1 fungicide sprays.
The Solution
It is for these reasons that many agronomists are now focused on where to deploy Inatreq™ active containing products in their programme, with a unique mode of action, providing both curative and persistent control against S.tritici. When used at T2, it is often the long persistence of protection that is sighted as a key reason to use products containing Inatreq. With Septoria developing as rapidly as it is, some are considering whether these properties may be needed at T1 (GS32) with thought to catchy weather possibly delaying T2 applications and therefore the reassuring persistence of control offered by Inatreq playing to their advantage at this application timing. With temperatures finally picking up, we are starting to see Septoria take off too. Depending on the variety and disease pressure, the T1 use rate for Inatreq containing products is 1.5-2.0L/Ha. Remember, products containing Inatreq may only be applied once within your fungicide programme. For those preferring to retain Inatreq for the T2 timing, where the greatest yield response is likely to be generated, the rate of use will still be 1.5-2.0L/Ha. Whatever the timing, growers are reminded of the stewardship advice provided which can be found at www.corteva.ie/inatreqadvice.

Controlling broad-leaved weeds in potatoes with Titus
A wet March saw planters unable to travel and seed stocks stuck in the shed. Over 120mm of rain fell in Dublin, and 211mm in Cork representing 100% more rainfall than is typical for the month, according to Met Eireann data.
While planting is now beginning to get underway, Corteva says maincrop potatoes are likely to have been drilled later than planned and, where April showers have continued, residual herbicide programmes may not have been applied in a timely manner, if at all. The bulk of weed control workload in potatoes is carried out using residual chemistry applied to ridges shortly after planting. Weeds evading the scope of residuals are tackled with a post emergence spray, typically in May.
Liz Glynn, National Field Technical Manager Ireland, said: “There are three main reasons why weed control is important in potatoes. The first is protecting the crop from yield-robbing competitive weeds, and the second is ensuring harvest machinery is not hampered or slowed down. But perhaps the most important reason to keep weeds in check is to reduce the risk of blight through sheltering leaves or contributing to a more favourable microclimate.”
Where growers find themselves too late to get their pre-emergence herbicides on, as the crop goes into rapidly-warming moist conditions, Titus® applied in mixture with metribuzin, provides the most comprehensive post-emergence weed spectrum. While Titus is safe across all varieties, but should not be applied to seed crops, users should check that their variety is listed as tolerant of metribuzin before including in the mix.
