Weed management solutions for maize
|
Maize is not very competitive in its early growth stage and will lose out to weeds as it emerges and develops.
Weeds also compete for water and nutrients and will have a negative impact on both quality and yield of this important crop as it goes through its maturity stages.
Climate change means we can see weather patterns with prolonged periods of no rain. It’s crucial that weeds are managed during these periods.
Today’s maize herbicide programmes not only need to consider weed pressure within the crop, but also what is happening post-harvest. For example, the Sustainable Farming Incentive introduces SOH4: payments for a winter cover that follows maize.

Leystar® is a selective herbicide for use in forage maize controlling key broad-leaved weeds such as chickweed, mayweed, seedling thistles. It is an emulsifiable concentrate containing 100g/L fluroxypyr, 80g/L clopyralid and 2.5g/L florasulam.
Key benefits:
- All three of Leystar’s actives deliver effective translocation for broad spectrum weed control.
- Delivers a broad-spectrum control of weeds, view the tech sheet for the complete weed list.
- A utility label also covers use on newly sown leys, established grassland, grass grown for seed, cereals and cereals undersown.
- Label now supports a tank mix with all leading brands of nicosulfuron. This tank mix must be applied before buttress roots become visible.

Principal® Forte is a NEW, a post-emergence herbicide, containing three powerful active ingredients for use on both forage and grain maize. It controls a wide range of both grass and broad-leaved weeds with few following crop restrictions. It is a water-dispersible granule containing 541.58g as/kg dicamba, 62.47g as/kg nicosulfuron, 31.25g as/kg rimsulfuron and 31.25g/kg isoxadifen-ethyl safener. Principal Forte must be applied with a 95% w/w rapeseed triglyceride oil such as Codacide or with Vivolt®, except when mixed with Callisto® where no adjuvant is needed.

Shield Pro™ is post-emergence herbicide which provides control of a range of perennial and annual broad-leaved weeds in maize. It is a soluble concentrate containing 400g/L clopyralid, giving excellent control of mayweeds, groundsel, sow thistles and creeping thistles.
Key benefits:
- The best solution for creeping thistle control.
- A utility product with a label to cover use in many other crops.

Application timing: GS13-19
Maximum total dose: 0.25L/ha
Water volumes: 200-250L/ha
Buffer zone: no LERAP restrictions

- Good activity on black nightshade, docks, field bindweed, docks and volunteer potatoes, view tech sheet for the complete weed list.
- Label now updated to permit tank mixing with nicosulfuron and a number of other selected products. This is the only fluroxypyr label with this option.

Maximise yield with BlueN™
|
Corteva’s novel nitrogen fixing biostimulant, BlueN, can fix up to 30kg/ha of nitrogen from the atmosphere. Farm use and independent trials show improvements in starch, ME and DM yields of the maize crop. BlueN is compatible in a tank mix with Principal Forte plus Codacide, meaning savings on application costs too.
